The force is currently conducting an internal review to create a new policing model that provides the best possible service to the public while meeting the nationally imposed budget cuts.
As part of this process, known as Operation ReDesign, the force has identified a range of activities and incidents that it could potentially stop doing to ensure effective use of resources.
For example, should police respond to reports of littering, cats in trees or lost property. What can we stop doing or do differently?
At the end of the day, people have to have Faith in the police, that they conduct themselves in a fair, unbiased and vigilant manner. I've grown up in Cambridge and also work here. It’s been my home for 15 Years plus, and our community are very tight, friendly and culturally diverse. Regardless of race and religion People have always respected one another and the general atmosphere in Cambridge has always been Cheerful and happy. We can't let these recent Riots and barbaric violence spread to our city and let copy cats run loose. Yes, there will be cut backs, but I think the police need enforce this whole idea about community bond and get people working together to stop potential crime before it happens. Involve the general public in schemes and encourage neighbourhood watches in all urban and suburban areas. Keep in constant communication with schools and help kids understand the importance of responsibility and consequences.

Although I understand this is an issue still debated in parliament, I still believe it worth mentioning.
Rather than officers wasting time arresting pleasant and mild-mannered Cannabis smokers who just want to relax in the sun on a nice day, they should be focusing on real crimes such as theft and assault. Just a few months ago I watched 2 of my friends get violently thrown to the ground, cuffed and hauled away (they were not resisting arrest) by undercovers. Just 50 feet away a couple of yobs beat up a young man and stole his shopping bags.
When I alerted the undercover officers, they looked over briefly and said "Sorry, we're too busy here at the moment".
Apparently a harmless, victimless 'crime' is far more important to the police than caring for a guy who was robbed and punched in the face repeatedly before their very eyes. No wonder people don't trust the service that is supposed to 'Protect & Serve'.
10/08/2011 02:24:52It is important that the 0345 number is answered promptly and this has not been happening recently. Once the public lose faith
problems go unreported.
There are times when far too great a resource is used on a relatively minor problem. I saw no less than 5 constables and PCSO's take one young shoplifter off a bus in St Ives when 2 would have been sufficient. The other three should have been deployed elsewhere.
The St Ives night time economy remains a serious problem for those living on the exit routes mostly on Friday and Saturday nights.

I am suprised at the negativity of many of the comments made on this issue. My own experience with the Police has always been positive even when on the wrong side of the law on a speeding offence. I feel that the problem for the Police lies with the failure of many of our citizens to take responsibility and responsible action for things which could adequately be dealt with as Community Action - littering is a case in point. Police cannot be expected to take on all of the ills of a failining society - come on, iuf you see litter pick it up, cats in trees get out a ladder, lost property put up notices in the area - all common sense. Let the Police do their job, upholding the laws of the country.

As the population of Britain increases, the police should be recruiting more officers, and not suffer from Goverment cutbacks. The ratio has always been one police officer per twenty people, and it should be continued. The police have a difficult job dealing with lawlessness individuals, who think they can get away with whatever they want to. They need our support to ensure there are no cutbacks.
