Be it for business or pleasure, motorcycling is an efficient and enjoyable mode of transport, that is gaining in popularity.

Motorcycles of today are high-powered, well engineered machines that handle superbly well. Together with continual developments in tyre design, the modern motorcycle is in itself far more capable than many of those that ride them.

The facts are that motorcyclists represent nearly 20% of serious and fatal road traffic collision casualties. When you consider that motorcycles account for only 3% of vehicular traffic on our roads, the casualty figures show that motorcyclists are very vulnerable and in a high risk group.

How can you reduce that risk?

It has been identified that the greatest number of collisions occur whilst overtaking or cornering. The main reason for this is due to poor observation and planning. Improving your skills and techniques in those areas will go a long way towards making you a safer rider. Bike Safe is a nation wide scheme that targets motorcyclists and is aimed at reducing road casualties.

Cambridgeshire Police is working in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council to provide a course called 'BIKERS, Enhance your Riders Skills'. The course consists of 3 two hour classroom session covering cornering, overtaking and hazard awareness. On completion you will be offered the chance to have your riding assessed by a Police Advanced Motorcyclist on a one to one Basis.
