The force's specialist search dogs are Labradors and Springer Spaniels

There are four dogs trained to detect drugs, weapons and cash, and four to locate explosives

The length of initial training they undergo can vary depending upon the specialist role they are being trained for. All of these dogs will also undergo regular training and along with their handlers must also be re-licensed annually.

These dogs can:

• Detect drugs/weapons/cash in open areas


• Search buildings for drugs/weapons/cash


• Search open areas for the presence of explosive substances


• Search buildings for the presence of explosive substances
